B-12 Happy Hour
Why methyl-B12?
The most common form of B12 is cyanocobalamin which is used because it is cheapest. Cyanocobalamin is B12 with a cyanide molecule attached to it. Once in the body it has to be converted to methylcobalamin or hydroxycobalamin to be utilized. If the person is able to convert cyanocobalamin the cyanide molecule is released and handled by the body’s detoxification and elimination process.
In order to convert cyanocobalamin to the form methylcobalamin your body must be able to do this conversion efficiently. However about 65% of the population have a gene mutation that causes them to be slow and inefficient at this conversion and 10-20% of the population have two gene mutations that make the process even slower. Which means they often have high circulating cyanocobalamin that their bodies cannot utilize.
Finally, B12 is poorly absorbed in the gut, so an intramuscular B12 injection of methylcobalamin bypasses all of these problems and fuels the body with an available active form. While 5000mcg is a high dose, it does not go to waste the body stores the extra B12 in the liver and releases it as needed. Therefore this shot can last up to 3 months. This active form of B12 also works to support methylation in the body which can lower homocysteine and contribute to lower odds of heart disease.
